SHILLONG: An awareness programme on environment and health, jointly organised by the Rotary Club of Orchid City, Shillong and Rotaract Club, NEHU in collaboration with the Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians, was held at Ferrando Transit Shelter home in Mawlai Mawdatbaki on Sunday.
A screening for cervical cancer was also conducted during the one-day programme which witnessed the participation of members of the North East Region Domestic Workers Movement.
During the first session, the President of Orchid City, Judita Syiemlieh spoke about the symptoms of Cervical cancer and its prevention.
She encouraged the participants to undergo regular screening and deliberated on the ill effects of tobacco.
She also highlighted cancer treatment facilities at Civil hospital Shillong and as part of cancer sreening and early detection, papsmear tests were conducted on the participants at the venue.
The Rotaractors from NEHU, under the leadership of Prem Prakash Singh, president, took over the session on environment and health.
It may be mentioned that the club had, on Thursday, inaugurated the wash station constructed at Divine Saviour English Medium School in Laitkynsew.
Speaking as the chief guest after inaugurating the project, Rotarian Barnabas Nongbah said that the wash station will benefit the students of the school and will prove vital in helping them develop personal hygiene.
