Agartala: A couple of days after Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar’s statement that the death of two tribal youths in Jirania, eastern Agartala on March 25 was accidental, one of the victims’ family demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident on Sunday.

Sarkar told media on March 30 that deceased Litan Debbarma (17) and Ravi Kumar Debbarma (19) were injured in road accident when they were escaping the political tension in Jirania, eastern Agartala on March 25.

His statement came in the face of allegation that the tribal duo fell victim to a political clash.

Situation turned murkier as another youth, Shyandaria Debbarma, who claimed to be with Litan and Ravi during the incident and managed to escape death, stated to police that his friends Ravi and Litan were brutally beaten up on March 25, resulting in their death.

Police too initially said all three youths were injured in road accident.

‘We were attacked by a group of people in front of Jirania CPI-M party office and beaten up severely but I managed to escape in the darkness,’ Shyandaria stated, claiming that his two friends Ravi and Litan were murdered.

Litan’s father Subodh Debbarma in a letter to the Chief Minister demanded a CBI inquiry into the death and stated, ‘Litan’s death was not due to an accident. It was a premeditated murder and police is trying to hush up the entire issue for some vested interest.’

Litan Debbarma passed away on March 29 at Agartala Govertment Medical College, a few hours before he was supposed to be flown to Kolkata for better treatment. Rabi, on the other hand, succumbed to injury a few hours after the incident.

Opposition leader Ratan Lal Nath on Sunday said efforts had been made to delete all possible evidence of Jirania rampage. (UNI)
