SHILLONG: The law department has finished vetting the requirement of land and terms and conditions for setting up the Shillong Medical College and Hospital at Umsawli.
An official said the law department has made some observations on how much additional land the KPC group, Kolkata which is executing the project, would require at Umsawli.
The department also examined the terms and conditions of the agreement framed by the KPC group.
Now, the state government would have to call the KPC group for a meeting and negotiate about the land requirement and the terms and conditions of the agreement.
The KPC now requires an additional 5-7 acres of land at Umsawli for the Medical College.
The KPC group has agreed to shift the site of the proposed Shillong Medical College and Hospital from Jhalupara to Umsawli
The existing land at Umsawli which is 17 acres, does not conform to the norms of the Medical Council of India since as per the norms, there should be 23 acres of land for setting up the medical college
The former chief minister Mukul Sangma in 2017 had laid the foundation stone for the state’s first medical college five years after an MoU was signed in the existing Reid Chest (TB) Hospital in Jhalupara.
However, the government has now decided to shift the project to Umsawli where substantial infrastructure for the project is already there as the government initially had plans to construct TB Hospital there.
It is learnt that the initial project cost was Rs 250 crore and now it will be escalated to around Rs 350-400 crore since the project has been delayed for over 6 years.
On the other hand, the construction of Tura Medical College has started and the project has made substantial progress.
