Killing of fish banned

SHILLONG: The District Magistrate, East Jaintia Hills District has promulgated an order under Section 144 CrPC banning mass killing of fish and aquatic life forms by using explosives, nets and poison in all rivers, streams throughout river Kupli under Saipung which could harm and kill the fishes and aquatic life. Sport activities and festival that could endanger the fishes and aquatic life were also prohibited under this section.
The order has been imposed in order to prevent and contain the rampant killing of fishes and to prevent danger to aquatic life and organism, and to secure balanced food chain and human consumption and sustainable growth in the aquatic life.
The order has been issued in view of the complaints received from the Acting Sordar Sumer Elaka regarding illegal and rampant killing of fishes and aquatic life forms by use of explosives and poisons at river Kupli.
