SHILLONG: Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has asked the State Government to setup a State-run university in Meghalaya as The North East Hill University (NEHU) could not cater to all students  and many students of the state they are forced to seek higher studies outside the state.

The demand came from the KSU education cell after a delegation of the union met Education Minister,   Linkmen Rymbui here on Thursday. The KSU stated that setting up of a state run university would be a boon for the students

Stating that the many students are facing problem due to the delay in disbursement of scholarships, the group further added that the existing polytechnics in the state should be upgraded to full-fledged  engineering colleges.

The group also lamented that the seat matrix adopted by the North Eastern Regional Institute of Education, Meghalaya  which is in compliance with the   Centre’s  reservation pool is highly unjustifiable owing to the fact that there is no seat reserved for the ST students but only for general and OBC.

The Union urged the  Government   to call upon the Central Government to exempt the state from the purview of the  centre’s poll but to follow the state’s reservation quota or to convert all quota for SCs and OBCs into STs.
