SHILLONG: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has asked the state government to set up a university in the state since the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) is unable to cater to all students forcing many to go for higher studies outside.
A KSU delegation raised the demand before Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui when they met him on Thursday. They said a state-run university would be a boon for the students.
Stating that many students are facing problems due to delays in disbursement of scholarships, the union members added that the existing polytechnics in the state should be upgraded to full-fledged engineering colleges.
The union members also lamented that the seat matrix adopted by the North Eastern Regional Institute of Education, Meghalaya which is in compliance with the Centre’s reservation pool is highly unjustified as there are no seats reserved for STs.
The union has, therefore, urged the government to prevail upon the Centre to exempt the state from the purview of the central pool and to follow the state’s reservation quota or to convert all SC and OBC quota for STs.
