Importance of traditional medicines highlighted

SHILLONG: In this era of modern medicines, the need to preserve traditional and indigenous medicines is of paramount importance and  keeping that in mind, a scientific discussion on indigenous system of medicines was held here at Hawkers’ Free zone market in Golflink on Friday.

Different experts, traditional healers and Government officials discussed at length about the need to familiarise the people with the local and indigenous medicines which has benefitted  people from donkey’s years.

Speaking  on the occasion, Meghalaya Government, Tathagata Roy said that modern medicines carry on research and development while other systems of medicines too have great importance.

Citing the example of Lakadong, he said that the Lakadong must be developed and its benefits must be meted out to the people

Urging people to have recourse to folk and traditional medicines, he added that traditional medicines could also be researched as it could do a lot of good to people, adding that herbal medicines have less dangerous side effects.

Earlier, short presentations were also made about traditional medicines by Dr H Bani, Khasi healer, and others

Health and Family Welfare Minister, A L Hek, Government officials and citizens were also present during the discussion.
