Nongpoh: Citizens of Nongpoh and administrators from the Nongpoh Town Committee and Umsning Town Dorbar finally have something to cheer for after the Deputy General Manager (Technical), National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), Guwahati made an assurance that construction of a footbridge, traffic police booths and side drains will begin as soon as the Model Code of Conduct in place for the Lok Sabha elections is withdrawn.
General Secretary of the Nongpoh Town Committee, Rayonald Kharkamni, made the announcement on Friday following a meeting with Sunil Sharma, DGM (Technical), NHAI, Guwahati on Thursday.
The NHAI official assured the team that the tender process for the projects as proposed by the Nongpoh and Umsning tow bodies will be initiated as soon as the Model Code of Conduct is withdrawn.
The delegation that met the NHAI official consisted of Nongpoh Town Committee chairman CB Syiem, general secretary Rayonald Kharkamni and member Kyrshan Lapang along with Balajied Kharshiing from the Umsning Town Dorbar and two other members who represented the Umsning legislator.
Kharkamni said that the Nongpoh Town Committee and the Umsning Town Dorbar were concerned over the delay by the NHAI in widening of side drains, construction of a footbridge at the main junction and traffic police booths at various locations despite a joint inspection conducted earlier this year by officials of NHAI and the local legislator of Umsning.
“We decided to jointly meet the official concerned of the NHAI to urge him for speedy implementation of our proposals for the safety of the people and the daily commuters, especially the school children”, Kharkamni said.
Pointing out that the rainy season is just a few weeks away, Kharkamni said widening of side drains to prevent flash floods in Nongpoh town is the need of the hour. “We have witnessed severe flash floods last year, causing difficulties to the general public and also triggering traffic snarls on NH-6 in Nongpoh”, Kharkamni lamented.
