SHILLONG: In this era of modern medicines, the need to preserve traditional and indigenous medicines is of paramount importance and keeping that in mind, a scientific discussion on indigenous system of medicines was held here at the Hawkers Free zone market in Golf Link on Friday.
Different experts, traditional healers and government officials discussed at length about the need to familiarise the people with the local and indigenous medicines which have benefitted people for long.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Tathagata Roy said that modern medicines carry on research and development while other systems of medicines too have great importance.
Citing the example of Lakadong turmeric, he said that it must be developed and its benefits must be passed on to the people.
Urging people to turn to folk and traditional medicines, he added that traditional medicines can also be researched as it can do a lot of good to people, adding that herbal medicines have lesser side effects.
Earlier, short presentations were made about traditional medicines by Dr H Bani, Khasi healer, and others.
Health and Family Welfare Minister AL Hek, government officials and citizens were also present during the discussion.
