Assam takes steps to repair embankments

Guwahati: With monsoons approaching and threat of perennial floods looming over the state, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has directed repairing of all vulnerable embankments on an urgent basis.
Chairing a review meeting of Water Resource Department here yesterday, he also instructed for constituting three units with the higher officials of Water Resource Department for inspecting the embankments in upper and lower parts of the state, along with those in Barak Valley.
Sonowal further directed for setting up of control rooms and flood assessment cells for taking stock of damages at all the divisions and sub divisions.
Providing of boats to SDRF teams at the flood affected areas, training the local youths by SDRF for enabling them to help in relief and rescue activities and identification of vulnerable electrical lines by Power Department were some key directives issued in the meeting.
Sonowal also directed the Water resource Department to depute a nodal officer for timely communication with deputy commissioners of the districts. During the meeting, the chief minister was apprised by the officials of the Water Resource Department that out of 29 embankments breached last year by floods, 28 had already been repaired. (UNI)
