TURA: The Garo Students’ Union in South Garo Hills have met with the Pro-Vice Chancellor of NEHU in Tura to urge upon the university authorities to give an opportunity to the students who missed the recent exams due to a shutdown for a fresh test.

The Mindikgre unit of the Garo Students Union met the Pro Vice Chancellor of NEHU, G Singhaih, on Saturday, urging that an opportunity be given for the unfortunate students who missed their Bachelor of Arts annual exams because of a protest closure across the southern district called by a group of organizations to protest over bad roads.

The Association for Democracy and Empowerment (ADE), FKJGP – SGH, among others, had been complaining over the slow progress of repairs on the NH – 62, and announced a two day Non Cooperation Movement unaware about the ongoing BA semester exams.

As a consequence of the NCM many students could not make it to the exam centres from their villages due to absence of public transport during the shutdown call.

In retaliation, angry students filed a FIR against the NGOs, including the ADE, FKJGP for the agitation which led to 35 students missing out the tests.

This was the last year for BA final students to appear in the old syllabus structure.

“We met the NEHU authorities on the matter and sought their help in holding reexamination for those students who missed out due to the protest call. The response was positive from their end and a solution is forthcoming. We dont want the students to suffer unnecessarily,” said GSU unit president, Greneth Sangma who led a delegation to meet with university officials.

Meanwhile, legislator from Chokpot constituency in South Garo Hills, Lazarus Sangma has also appealed to university authorities to consider a fresh examination for the students who could not attend the last one due to the protest shutdown.
