GUWAHATI: Under pressure from regional and literary organisations here, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan has withdrawn its decision not to slot regional languages including Assamese during school hours.

A meeting in this context was held where the decision of KVS was communicated.

The meeting was presided over by commissioner and secretary, Secondary Education, Preetom Saikia and attended by deputy commissioner KVS, regional office here, C. Neelap, and representatives of Asam Sahitya Sabha among others.

KVS had through a notification on March 29, 2019, decided to slot teaching of regional languages beyond school hours, a move which was opposed by Asam Sahitya Sabha.

The apex literary organisation of Assam had on Monday even warned of a democratic agitation if KVS did not revoke its notification within three weeks.

The deputy commissioner of KVS, regional office Guwahati has communicated that as per Article 112 of Education Code for Kendriya Vidyalayas teaching of regional languages including Assamese will be done during school hours for about two to three periods per week.

The KVS has also been asked to engage contractual teachers for teaching of Assamese.

Meanwhile, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has welcomed KVS’ initiative to include Assamese language teaching in the curriculum of Kendriya Vidyalayas.

Sonowal had directed the education department to take up the matter of slotting Assamese within school hours with KVS.
