SHILLONG: Tourism Minister Metbah Lyngdoh has stressed the need to implement some sort of regulation to ensure that the Living root bridges in Meghalaya are protected.
The statement of the minister assumes significance as the village where the Living root bridge is situated is witnessing quite a substantial number of tourists.
“I think we would have to give some tips to the authorities in charge of looking after the bridges so that they can ensure that the bridges are not damaged,” he said.
It may be mentioned that the authorities looking after the bridge have already taken up measures such as limiting the number of people on the bridge.
Tourists are also requested to walk across the bridge gently, without jumping and are not allowed to stand in the middle.
Living root bridges are a form of tree shaping common in the southern part of the state and over the years, the living root bridges have attracted huge numbers of domestic as well as international tourists from far and wide.
