SHILLONG: Body of the young British tourist, Christina Read, was fished out on Tuesday almost one-and-a-half kilometres away from the spot where she was washed away by the strong current of the Umkynsan river on Saturday.

Around 50 divers of the Meghalaya Fire Service, besides locals, fished out the body on Tuesday afternoon three days after she was washed away.

A rescue team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Guwahati, which arrived at the spot on Tuesday, also participated in the exercise to locate the body.

The tourist from Britain was swept away when she along with her companions were swimming in the Umkynsan river near Sohra when the disaster occurred.

The body was brought to Shillong where a post-mortem of the body will be conducted on Wednesday, police said, adding, the victim’s father was already in the city to receive the body.

“We will hand over the body to the relatives after completing all formalities,” a senior police official said.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF) on Tuesday conveyed its condolences to the bereaved family of Christina Read.

The Forum also appealed to all tour operators and destination caretakers to prioritize the safety and wellbeing of tourists and to put into practice a set of Do’s and Don’ts for all tourists visiting the State so that such incidents do not recur in future.
