SHILLONG: The Union Government is not in favour of bifurcation of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre in line with the split in the Manipur-Tripura cadre.

Official sources informed that the Centre is not in favour of bifurcation of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre since the size of Meghalaya cadre would be very small.

“It would be difficult to sustain a separate Meghalaya cadre,” the official sources added.

However, majority of the political parties in the State are in favour for bifurcation of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre. Opposition Leader Conrad K Sangma feels that if the cadres of both Manipur and Tripura are being separated then there is nothing wrong if the State Government tries to impress upon the Centre for separation of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre.

“The State would be greatly benefited if we have our own cadre,” the Opposition Leader added.

Former Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy (UDP) observed that the demand for a separate Meghalaya cadre is a genuine one.

“We had earlier been informed that that there would be a single cadre for the entire North East,” Dr Roy said while pointing out that separation of the Manipur-Tripura cadre raises hope that Meghalaya would have a separate cadre in the future.
