AGARTALA: The first unit of Palatala power project is expected to be operational by June 30 next, according to BHEL sources.

The commissioned date for the first unit of 726 MW power plant has been conveyed to Chief Minister (in-charge) Minister Manik Dey in a meeting involving OTPC and BHEL officials at Palatana site, around 8 km from Udaipur today.

During presentation, Bora claimed that BHEL Engineers would be able to commission the first unit by June 30 next keeping in mind of the progress of the project. It means, turbines will be in a position to supply power to the Grid established within the Palatana premises. Dey, the OTPC and BHEL sources claimed was happy with the development of works and asked them to meet the deadline by any means. However, other works including laying of pipe line within the premises and transmission line need to be expedited. However, the ONGC has already completed the gas pipe-line from Lambutali to Palatana through Bishramganj to supply natural gas. According to ONGC sources, they will be ready to supply gas to the Palatana project well before the commissioning of first phase. The Rs. 3500 crore project was scheduled to be commissioned in December last year but could not make it due to unavoidable circumstance. Then, the ONGC had announced that the first phase of the mega power project would be ready for operation by February. Today, it was announced that first unit would come up by June 30 next. Besides Tripura, four NE states- Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram will receive power from the Palatana power plant.
