SHILLONG: The General Secretary of United Democratic Party (UDP), Jemino Mawthoh said the Congress’ debacle in Lok Sabha polls in the country should be seen as a warning bell.

The Congress grappled with the BJP aiming to oust the saffron party at the Center only to be overwhelmed by the BJP for a second term.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, he was responding to an earlier observation made by Congress MLA Process Sawkmie that the loss of the MDA candidate in Shillong Lok Sabha constituency should be a warning bell for the regional parties in the state.

Mawthoh said, “It is instead a warning bell for the Congress.” He observed that there might be defection to other parties by Congress politicians following Congress’ countrywide poor show in Lok Sabha polls.

He criticised the Congress for misleading the people using the issue of the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), cow slaughter and anti-conversion law.

According to him, the CAB was initiated by the Congress when the Congress representatives embraced Hindu outsiders.
