GUWAHATI: The gateway to the Northeast – Guwahati – will soon be connected by air with South and South East Asia, starting with a direct flight to Dhaka from July 1.
Assam transport, industry and commerce minister Chandra Mohan Patowary has disclosed before the media on Saturday that under the UDAN (Ude Desk Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, Guwahati would be connected by air to at least five countries.
“The state government is looking at enhancing air connectivity to South East Asian countries which will boost trade and tourism. To begin with, flight services from Guwahati to Dhaka will start from July 1 while another direct flight to Bangkok will commence after August 15, 2019,” Patowary asserted.
Plans are on to start direct flights to Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport here.
“The joint secretary of the civil aviation ministry yesterday confirmed that following direct air connectivity with Dhaka and Bangkok, flights to Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia would soon start from Guwahati,” the minister said.
Work is on to upgrade the LGBI Airport, which also includes construction of a new terminal.
