SHILLONG: The State Government has handed over a plot of land here to the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) to set up its centre to provide trainings on public health.

The Shillong centre of the PHFI, which was launched in 2006 by the Prime Minister to cater to the need to the health sector, will be its fifth in the country after Hyderabad, Gurgaon, Ahmedabad and Bhubaneshwar.

Urban Affairs department has handed over the plot of land measuring 22.3 acres at Mawdiangdiang to the Health and Family Welfare department for setting up of the Institute.

Commissioner and Secretary of Health and Family Welfare Department, DP Wahlang and Senior Director (Operations), PHFI, Suresh Kumar signed the lease agreement for the land on Wednesday.

At present, the Institute is running its training programme at the Health department building at Pasteur Hills.

Foundation stone of the Institute was laid in 2008 at Mawdiangdiang by the then Chief Minster Dr Donkupar Roy.

The PHFI, conceptualised as a response to the emerging health challenge and concern in the country, will establish schools of public health and enhance the capacity of existing multiple institutions and agencies with convergent interests.
