SHILLONG: A cyclonic storm accompanied by rain damaged at least 28 houses in Laitkor area on Tuesday afternoon.

The two localities of Laitkor area — Laitkor Rngi and Laitkor Nondaneng — have been affected badly.

According to the villagers, the cyclone which lasted for nearly an hour blew away roof-tops of several houses including four automobile workshops in the area.

Meanwhile, East Khasi District Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said, “We have assessed that more than 38 families were affected by the storm and the Block Development Officer from Mylliem, D Hynniewta has been asked to assess the situation.”

The BDO is expected to give his report by Wednesday and the district administration will provide relief to the affected victims as per norms of the government, Goyal told a news agency. The dorbar (traditional village council) provided immediate relief to the affected families. The Headman of Laitkor Rngi S Pyngrope and the local member of the Autonomous District Council, L Malngiang distributed CGI sheets to the victims.

“We have directed all those affected families to stay in their neighbour’s houses till completion of the repair work,” Pyngrope said. (With inputs from PTI)
