SHILLONG: The State Government may ask the Assam government to conduct a fresh probe into Langpih firing of May 14, 2010, if it is not satisfied with the findings of the Justice PC Phukan Commission.

Indicating this here on Monday, Chief Secretary WMS Pariat said Meghalaya Government might even constitute its own judicial probe panel “if the report is found to be unsatisfactory.”

The Justice Phukan Commission submitted its report to the Assam Government on March 31 last.

“At the moment we have requested the Assam Government to provide us with the copy of the report. Once we receive the report we would thoroughly study and examine it in details,” Pariat said adding that the report would be placed before the Cabinet for examination.

The Government would take the final call on this issue after studying the report, he said.

It may be recalled that on May 14, 2010, four Khasi villagers were killed and 12 injured in a firing by Assam police personnel at Langpih, bordering West Khasi Hills district and Assam’s Kamrup district, one of 12 disputed areas on the Assam-Meghalaya boundary. When asked on the proposed border talks between the two states, Pariat said, “We have submitted all required documents and papers to our counterparts”, adding, “Now we are waiting for Assam government’s response”.
