Jowai: An illegal coal mine on Rymbai road on Tuesday. The rainy season has started and one can see water already filling the mine at the bottom which eventually floods the mine shaft till the brim. In this process immense leaching takes placeswhich makes the water highly acidic after mixing with the sulphur from the coal resulting in acid mine drainage. This water makes its way into streams and rivers through its natural course and also when it is pumped out of the mined and released into nearby rice fields.
