500 kg trash removed by Coast Guard from under water
Chennai: The Indian Coast Guard on Wednesday carried out underwater clean up off the Kovalam beach to mark the World Environment Day and removed 500 kg of trash.
The Coast Guard, along with M/s Dive India, conducted the clean-up.
Underwater debris clean-up is a regular phenomenon in popular public beaches around the world.
This is the first time such efforts were made in Indian waters to remove sunken debris, nets and other items, an official statement said. (IANS)
Ganga will be cleaned in two years: Minister
New Delhi: Reacting to criticism over ‘Namami Gange’ project failing to show results, Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Wednesday said the capacity building programmes were underway and visible changes will be seen in the next two years.
Speaking at an event to mark the World Environment Day here, Shekhawat said the government’s efforts alone would not be enough and sought people’s participation for the rejuvenation and conservation of the Ganga.
“It is being asked why Ganga has not been cleaned in the past four years. The capacity building programmes are going on with full speed. As many as 98 of the total 298 projects undertaken had almost been completed,” he said.(IANS)
Himachal to buy back non-recyclable polythene
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Wednesday announced launch of a scheme to buy back non-recyclable polythene at a fixed price.
He also launched environment-friendly bags made by the Department of Environmental Science and Technology.
Congratulating people on World Environment Day, the Chief Minister appreciated the support given by them in ensuring effective ban on plastic in the state.
He also launched the launched WaPIS (Water Purification Invigorative Scheme) under which 38 types of plant species have been identified to treat waste water in river streams. (IANS)
