SHILLONG: Braving inclement weather, thousands of Muslim faithfuls in the state including the capital city of Shillong celebrated Eid ul-fitr with religious fervor on Wednesday.
Special prayers were offered at the various mosques in the city as rain played spoil sport and made it difficult to offer prayers outside in the open ground or Eidgah.
The biggest congregation was held at the famous glass mosque at Laban which witnessed thousands of people coming in for the prayers. Despite the attempts to accommodate the people inside the three- storeyed mosque, the prayer service had to be conducted in two shifts.
Similar was the situation in other mosques as well as special prayers could not be conducted in other Eidgahs of the city due to the weather. The Imams in their sermons urged Muslims to continue the good deeds of Ramadan and to have empathy towards the poor and the society at large. The priests also made dua (supplication) for universal peace.
Meanwhile, BSF Sector Commandant, Dawki, SR Khan wished everyone on the occasion and said that Eid-Ul –Fitr is a one-month collective training of patience, a training of self-restraint and today is a passing out celebration of the one month training.
Once the prayers and Khutbah got over, people greeted each other and headed home greeting more people on their way.
People also visited the homes of friends and relatives to offer Eid greetings. Special dishes are cooked and served to mark the occasion and the festivities continue for two or three days.
