SHILLONG: As the World Environment Day was celebrated all over the world, an initiative by a company to popularise organic bags was launched in the city on Wednesday.
The organic bags were launched by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma at St. Edmund’s School Shillong.
The co-founders and directors of Saindur Enviro Pvt. Ltd. (Shillong) Vivek Kumar, Wansuk Lapasam and Napoleon Mawphniang were also present on the occasion.
During the programme, Kumar mentioned that Saindur Enviro (SE) organic bags are 100% compostable and they are a promising alternative to polythene carry bags.
He also informed that the bags will be available in all the sizes, ranging from kwai packets to shopping bags of different shape and sizes and garbage bags up to 15 kg holding capacity, all compostable.
Conrad congratulated the team for the initiative and added that it can solve the pollution related to plastic carry bags in Meghalaya.
He encouraged the use of SE organic bags to fight with the problem of plastic pollution caused by polythene carry bags.
He expressed his concern over increasing pollution in the city and in different parts of the state.
Vijay Kumar D, CEO, Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA), Aiban Swer, Director Meghalaya Basin Development Authority and Principal, St. Edmund’s School were also present.
The SE organic bags are 100 per cent compostable and are made up of PLA (polylactic acid)-based material derived from renewable sources like corn-starch, cassava, sugarcane, etc.
As an added benefit, the bags get composted in 90-180 days without leaving any toxic residue in soil, adding that the left over is manure and can be used to enrich soil’s fertility.
The product is certified by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The bags are also use in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Kerala.
The company has distributors and pamphlets will be pasted outside the shops using the SE carry bags.
