SHILLONG: The CSWO faction led by Agnes Kharshiing on Wednesday sought the intervention of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) into the alleged rape case.

In a letter addressed to the NCPCR Chairperson on Wednesday, Kharshiing complained about the lapse of the Investigating officer Iba Nongrum and failure of the Assistant Public Prosecutor TB Chetri to protect the interest of the victim in the rape case.

According to Kharshiing, medical examination of the victim conducted on the same day of the incident had confirmed the rape, yet the accused was not arrested by Jowai Police, giving the accused ample time to move for an anticipatory bail.

Kharshiing also alleged in the letter that Phawa had even threatened the victim and her family.

She also demanded that the case be immediately transferred to another Investigating Officer.

Meanwhile, Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, O Passi, when contacted, said that police is conducting the investigation in a fair and proper manner.

Reacting to the allegations of the NGOs that Police were slow in acting against the accused, Passi said, “We are doing our job. Let the NGOs think whatever they want.”
