SHILLONG: The state is witnessing worsening law and order situation as per the latest trend.
Sources said though Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is taking positive steps to address the overall development of the state, the brutal assault on a naked man in Ranikor by miscreants, sex racket in Jowai resulting in the rescue of 20 minor girls and unsolved cases of crimes against women, the latest being the recovery of the body of MTDC employee, are negative examples damaging the image of the state.
According to sources, the killing of a border resident in East Khasi Hills last month by HNLC has created fear psychosis among other border residents.
Besides, the MDA government is confronted with the issues related to Harijan Colony, violation of NGT order on coal mining and measures to check influx in the state, among others.
The HNLC has already threatened to take action against the residents of Harijan Colony.
The attack on activists and police personnel who are resisting illegal transportation of coal has become frequent.
The Ri Bhoi Youth Organisation president Baiateilang Lapang is the latest victim after Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma were attacked on November 13 last year.
In May this year, an angry mob had attacked several police personnel guarding a check gate at Tuber Sohshrieh, East Jaintia Hills to facilitate the movement of coal trucks.
A senior police official, however, said the police are committed to maintain law and order.
“We are making efforts to contain all sorts of crimes affecting the state”, the official added.
