Cattle smuggling: Butchers meet Ri Bhoi DC

SHILLONG: The Khasi and Jaintia Butchers’ Welfare Association (KJBWA) met the DC of Ri-Bhoi on Monday at Nongpoh to discuss the grievances faced by the association.
The strike by KJBWA from Friday to stop cattle smuggling, has affected the sale of beef in the markets as all shops selling beef were closed.
Concerned over the matter, Congress legislator PT Sawkmie has urged the government to resolve the issue by holding talks with the association as the strike has affected the sale of beef in Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
He wanted the Deputy CM cum in-charge of Animal Husbandry Prestone Tynsong to take initiative in this regard. When contacted, president of the association, Generous Warlarpih said they discussed on the contentious issue of cattle smuggling and health certificate being issued every now and then witth the Ri Bhoi DC.He said the association has suggested that the Khanapara market should be closed down since investigation is going on with regard to cattle smuggling and health certificate.
He went on to add that only butchers of the association are not purchasing cattle from the market while the smugglers posing as traders smuggle cattle to Bangladesh.
Warlarpih said the DC suggested the doctors of the Veterinary to file an FIR against fake health certificates.
