GSU seeks appointment of head for Williamnagar College
TURA: The Garo Student’s Union, East Zone has served a fifteen-day ultimatum to the education department regarding the appointment of a full-fledged Principal at Williamnagar Government College. The college has been functioning without a permanent head for a long time. In a letter to the Director of Higher and Technical Education, the GSU leadership mentioned that after the retirement of Principal Paritosh Chakravorty the government failed to appoint a new head and only gave permission for senior lecturer Omprakash Khadka to run the institute as the in-charge. The student union called for the early appointment of a permanent head to steer the higher education institute in the right direction. The union has also warned that it will not hesitate to embark on a agitation course in the interest of student’s education.
Dissociation with town committee
SHILLONG: The Executive Member (EM) in charge of Town Committee, Paul Lyngdoh said the Town Planning department will examine the documents pertaining to the registration of eight villages under the Nongpoh Town Committee, Ri-Bhoi District. Lyngdoh informed reporters that the eight Dorbar Shnong want to dissociate from the Nongpoh Town Committee as they do not get any developmental activities from the Committee. He pointed out that the KHADC will conduct a spot assessment to gather public opinion and to get a written representation from the villages, following which a decision will be taken. The eight villages that want to be dissociated from the Nongpoh Town/Urban include Shangbangla, Pahamrioh Lum, Pahamrioh Them, Umskun, Umshangling, Umlyngkdait, Lumryngksai and Lumbyrhing.
Skill training for coal miners
Shillong: Following the ban on coal mining in the state, the Labour Department, through the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS) with the support of Aide et Action (NGO), conducted a two-week long Community Mobilisation Drive in May to sensitise the general public, particularly those affected by the coal mining ban, and to offer them various short-term skill training programmes. It was organised with an aim to create awareness about the objectives and benefits under the programme. During the two-week long drive, efforts were made to reach out to the people in various areas and corners of the two districts through home visits, awareness programmes, poster campaigns and mobile announcements with the support of the Directorate of Information & Public Relations.
