Government asks residents not to employ children

SHILLONG: With child labour being still prevalent in the district of East Khasi hills and the state as a whole, the government authorities face hurdles to inspect children working as domestic workers in people’s homes.
Speaking to section of the press on Wednesday, Deputy Labour Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, PT Blah urged the residents to not employ children who are below 14 years of age in their homes or to employ minors below 18 in any hazardous environment.
Blah and his team inspected certain shops in Khyndai Lad and also pasted pamphlets on shops, cars to sensitise the people on Anti-Child Labour Day.
He informed that the present scenario has changed as most children are not seen working in shops or stalls, showing that people are aware of the not employing children.
When asked about inspection, he said it is carried out twice in every week.
CHILDLINE celebrates the day
CHILDLINE, Bosco Integrated Development Society, Shillong, observed the World Child Labour Day in collaboration with Spark Learning Centre, Shillong, and internship students from Assam Don Bosco University.
A walk against child labour took place around Mawlonghat area on Wednesday which culminated at Cantonment Police Beat House. Placards were displayed and distribution of pamphlets were issued by the Office of the Labour Commissioner, Meghalaya to create awareness against child labour.
Laitumiong RCLP SSA school celebrates the day
Child Labour Day was celebrated at Laitumiong RCLP SSA School on Wednesday on the theme ‘Children shouldn’t work in the field but in dream.’
The programme was hosted by A kharbudon which was then followed by a welcome speech by the project coordinator A Warjri.
Several activities like singing, fun and games, were also conducted to make the children more attentive and also develop an interest towards the programme.
