TURA: Several organizations from the North East coming together as one single body have urged the Meghalaya Government to take special measures to safeguard the environment in the state in order to prevent the effects of global warming.

In their memorandum submitted to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Minister of Forests and Environment, Lakhmen Rymbhui, the All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) along with 20 other student bodies of eight North Eastern States urged the state government to spread the message of environment protection and create awareness on the importance of tree plantation and afforestation to curb the menace of global warming.

In this regard, the organizations suggested the issuance of notifications or enactment of laws making it mandatory for theatre halls to show a few minutes of environment protection clips to create awareness among the masses. The organizations also urged that direction be issued to all building permission regulatory bodies to insert a clause in building permission that the builders plant trees at the site depending on the size of the plot. They further sought that similar instruction is issued to Industrial Licensing Authorities, PWD, RWD (Rural Works Department) and NHAI to make provisions for plantation of trees whenever they initiate road construction works. It may be mentioned that the organizations have been jointly observing the World Environment Day on June 5 every year with the plantation of trees and saplings at different venues. This year too, a total of 550 varieties of trees and saplings were planted by the organizations as a mark of observing the occasion.
