SHILLONG: Former MLA Pynshai M Syiem submitted a letter to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong urging him to look into the controversial Themiew Mawlong which according to him had been allotted as a temporary stay to the residents of Harijan Colony by the government.
Syiem pointed out that the area has turned into an eyesore in which congestion poses great difficulty to the government and the general public.
“This area has turned into a slum which will become a menace to the state if no action is taken at the earliest,” he said.
“I would suggest the implementation of the Meghalaya Slum Area (Improvement and Clearance) Act 1959 which was adopted by the state under the Meghalaya Adoption of Laws Order No.3 of 1973 as the area at Themiew Mawlong is unfit for human habitation and is detrimental to the safety, health or moral of the people,” he added.
The Act provides for the clearance of slum areas in and around the town and countryside of Meghalaya.
