Items under damage threat in Agartala store

Agartala: The Tripura government has asked Bhuturi Cold Storage authority to take immediate steps to ensure safety to the agricultural produces in the store, which has stopped functioning since Thursday following leakage of Ammonia gas.

The Tripura State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) asked to close down the store soon after the leakage was reported.

It also directed the Bhuturia authority to undertake all necessary preventive measures in the complex before re-starting the cold storage.

According to report, a few thousand metric tonnes of vegetables and other highly perishable goods are stored in Bhuturia, the biggest warehouse in the state.

Both the business community as well as local farmers have stored their agricultural produces in Bhuturia. Locals have expressed concern over the disaster management system of the warehouse authority and fire service officials of Tripura. They demanded shifting of the warehouse from thickly populated location of the city.

According to report, the labourers noticed sudden leakage of Ammonia in the wee hours of yesterday trigerring panic in the sarrounding. Later, fire service official rushed to the spot with fire-fighting instruments despite information of Ammonia leakage, alleged residents alleged.

TSPCB officials pointed out that the warehouse authority was asked to bring experts to permanently cap the gas leakage and afterwards they would be given permission to allow functioning of the cold chain. (UNI )
