SHILLONG: With incessant rain affecting communication network, people residing in border areas in Mawsynram constituency have encountered hardship as they are running out of food supplies and other essential commodities.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, MLA from Mawsynram, HM Shangpliang said on Sunday that the whole border road starting from Dangar to Ringku was cut off from communication.
Besides, most of the border roads have been cut off from communication for the last 10 days.
“Culverts were washed away to the border. The people are suffering as food and other essential materials are insufficient. Even the Border Security Force (BSF) rations are depleting. I have requested the Deputy Commissioner to send relief,” he said, adding, “People are complaining that they are running out of rice. At my own level, I will be sending rice, sugar and salt which will reach tomorrow evening.
There is delay to send relief by the state government.”
On the other hand, PWD road has caved in near Hatmawdon while culverts at Dhulai, Lalpani and Sonatola were washed away. Villagers in the area will have to walk up to Dangar to get food.
Shangpliang said the state government should repair the border roads at the earliest.
As on July 13, 61, 036 persons in 957 villages were affected due to flood after heavy rainfall.
