Memo submitted to Education Minister RC Laloo

SHILLONG: The Achik Youth Welfare Association (AYWO) has urged the State Government to open five more higher secondary schools with the science and commerce streams in the three districts of Garo Hills.

“We feel the coming up such education institutions would be in the best interest of the students of Garo Hills,” AYWO president Adinshon Ch Momin said in a memorandum to Education Minister Prof RC Laloo recently.

Momin informed that at present there were only two institutions that offer commerce course in Garo Hills adding that both these colleges (Don Bosco College and Tura Government College) were in Tura.

“We have only nine institutions with science stream in Garo Hills,” the AYWO chief said.

“Over 5000 students apply for science stream every year in Garo Hills,” Momin said adding that these nine institutions could give admission to only 720 students.

Coming to commerce stream, Momin said every year more than 3500 students want to study in this stream, but both the colleges could accommodate only 180 students.

The AYWO chief appreciated the State government’s recent move to regularise three colleges –Sohra College, Willia-mnagar College and Cpt W Sangma College in Baghmara.
