SHILLONG: The condition of the SC Das Lane in Jail Road continues to bother pedestrians who take the route on a daily basis.

Residents of the area have raised concerns about the condition of this lane, but nothing substantial has been done so far.

Large scale construction on both sides has further damaged the lane which is used by thousands of pedestrians’ everyday as a shortcut connecting Polo with Umsohsun and Police Bazar.

An elderly resident of the area said that he could not remember when this lane was last repaired. “This lane has served us for ages and now it deserves a topping,” he said.

Another resident said that though the lane has been damaged because of the large scale construction that cannot be an excuse for the authorities not to repair it. “When lanes in Harisabha have been black-topped and water pipes have been laid inside an aqueduct by the Laban MLA then what is preventing our MLA from doing the same here,” questioned a resident, who depends on the Polo market for his requirements. Another factor that contributes to the pathetic condition of the lane is the entry of two wheelers from Jail Road Market.

“The entire lane has turned highly commercial,” said a resident adding that though there was an assurance from the local MLA to repair the lane the same never materialised.

Pynthorumkrah MLA, AL Hek, under whose constituency the area falls, was not available for comments.
