SHILLONG: The list of awardees for the UGC Postgraduate Merit Scholarship for 2011-12 has been posted on the website of the University Grants Commission. Out of the 309 merit scholarships awarded nationwide, 27 have gone to students from Meghalaya, 25 of whom are studying at institutions in the state.

Of these, 14 scholarships have been awarded to students of Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) students, 10 to NEHU and one to Sikkim Manipal University.  The scholarship amount for the previous year was Rs 92,000 per student.  The amount for this year is yet to be announced.

Dr Glenn Kharkongor, Vice Chancellor, MLCU said, “The University has completed five years and we had a review meeting recently about our past performance and future goals. The review clearly revealed that nearly all our students are gainfully employed. Those passing out of the Allied Health Sciences particularly have met a felt need of the State for laboratory and other health assistants. They have been employed by different health institutes in Meghalaya and elsewhere. We get constant feedback about their performance and are gratified to know that the institutions are happy with our students,” Dr Kharkongor said.

When asked why MLCU is constantly in the news for the wrong reasons, Dr Kharkongor said, “The media usually does not write positive stories of students who have done well. But we have no quarrel with that. MLCU is making great strides although a very new institution and there are many who appreciate our efforts.

We cannot get bogged down by negative criticism. That so many of our students have bagged the UGC scholarships over the years should silence our detractors.”
