Guwahati: A project of laying a brand new water supply system for an entire city with a massive cost outlay, not attempted anywhere else, is being implemented in Guwahati.
Aimed at 100 per cent population coverage under greater Guwahati Metropolitan Area by 2016, three water supply projects are being implemented by the state government with funding from the government of India (JNNURM), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) at a total cost of over Rs 2,713 crores.
‘These three projects will seek to provide affordable, reliable, safe, pressurized and continuous supply of water to this fast developing Guwahati Metropolitan Area,’ Capt Robin Bordoloi, chairman of Guwahati Metropolitan Development Agency (GMDA), the implementing agency, said on Wednesday. The additional director of the project implementation unit, CK Bhuyan, pointed out that this water supply project was the first in which the supply system for an entire city was being laid anew.
