SHILLONG: KHADC Executive Member (EM) in charge of Trade, Paul Lyngdoh said since there is increase in Benami transactions, punitive actions will be taken.
Replying to a supplementary query raised by Congress MDC Grace Kharpuri on Wednesday during the summer session, he said that absence of prosecution increases benami transaction as he maintained that so far there are no cases of prosecution for violations of Benami Transaction Act, 1980.He said that the local tribal community encourages the system of Benami transaction and pointed to Majai and maintained that mix communities in Shillong are prone to Benami transaction.
Lyngdoh said that through the action plan prepared by the department, he assured that cases that come to the notice of the department will be dealt with and hoped that in the coming 2-3 months, the department will be able to detect and also to prosecute as per the Meghalaya (Benami Transactions Prohibition) Act, 1980 and the Trade Regulation, 1954.
