JOWAI: Jowai police on Wednesday conducted raid on gambling dens cum bull fights- an event organized on regular basis in some pockets of Jaintia Hills district.
A team of police led by the Additional Superintendent of Police, Lakador Syiem conducted a raid at Soo-mer area here and seized few sets of gambling apparatus and two vehicles- Mahindra Pick up that were used for carrying bulls to the venue. Police also arrested three persons- who claimed to be spectators.
The illegal business is organised by a group of businessmen without obtaining any permission from the competent authorities either from the DC office or Sub-Divisional Offices.
Both illegal games are organised even at night and police also seized three halogen assembles and other electrical sets besides 14 packets of candle to light the area till the game stops late in the night.
The raid was conducted on the order issued by the Jaintia hills Deputy Commissioner prohibiting such illegal activities that are practiced in many places in Jaintia Hills District.
Earlier, the Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner T. Dkhar promulgated section 144 CrPC prohibiting bull fights and illegal gambling in the district.
According to Dkhar, the prohibitory order was issued after several complaints were received from people with regard to the illegal bull fights and gambling.
Meanwhile, Lakador Syiem said more raids would be conducted in near future to eradicate such illegal activities.He also called upon residents of the district to come forward and put a stop to such illegal activities that affects the society. “We need public support and coordination to stop such illegal activities”, Syiem said.
