Dana Silva M Sangma is laid to rest in Tura on Thursday evening.

TURA: In the wake of the tragic death of Dana Silva M Sangma 23-year-old MBA student from Tura who committed suicide in Amity university, Gurgaon, after being severely reprimanded by an invigilator for allegedly carrying a mobile phone inside the examination centre, the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has condemned the racial discrimination of students from Northeast and demanded justice.

The GSU has written a letter to Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma condemning the Amity incident in which his niece Dana Sylva M Sangma committed suicide because of alleged discrimination and humiliation by an invigilator on Tuesday.

“We strongly condemn the incident in which we have lost our beloved sister and we convey our solidarity with the bereaved family,” said the GSU in a statement.

The GSU has asked the Meghalaya government to look into the issue of discrimination and the causes leading to the death of young Dana Sylva.

The North East Students’ Union (NESO) has also condemned the incident with its finance secretary Manseng A Sangma criticizing the Amity university faculty for pushing the young girl towards the extreme merely on suspicion of cheating without any clear evidence.

“It is regular to experience discrimination of Northeast students who study in mainland India. Such acts should be condemned,” said the NESO leader and asked MPs from the region to intervene and do more to eradicate racial discrimination.

Meanwhile, the young niece of the Chief Minister was laid to rest in Tura cemetery on Thursday evening in the presence of Dr Mukul Sangma and the immediate family of late Dana.

Hundreds of people joined the funeral procession to show solidarity with the bereaved family.
