SHILLONG: The State Government has decided to accept one of the demands of the NGOs for removing the recently established ‘Special Counter’ for enrollment of the eligible voters as directed by the Election Commission (EC).

The Government took this decision late Thursday evening after the dialogue with the NGOs failed to arrive at any conclusion.

Informing about the decision of the Government, Minister in charge of Election JA Lyngdoh said that the Government has decided to remove the recently established ‘Special Counters’ at all Deputy Commissioner and Block Offices as demanded by the NGOs.

“We have decided to replace these Special Counters with facilitation cells to be located in the room of the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) to ensure that no doubtful voters are enrolled,” Lyngdoh informed.

He informed that initially the Government would set up the facilitation cell in East Khasi Hill district and same would be subsequently replicate in other districts also.

He also said that the voters’ registration forms will be distributed by the ADM in charge of East Khasi Hills District, DM Wahlang.
