SHILLONG: The juicy strawberries and famed oranges that are produced in Meghalaya will not remain confined to the region as the newly revived traditional Border Haat at Balat in East Khasi Hills will make these fruits available across the border in neighboring Bangladesh.

This is in line with the recent notification by the Commissioner, Customs (Preventive), North Eastern Region who said that apart from fruits, juices other products such as garments, melamine besides food items that are produced locally in the concerned districts of the assigned haat can be traded in these haats.

It may be mentioned that the inclusion and trading of these products have been possible after both Indian and Bangladesh officials agreed on it and haats can be used as trading centres for those districts that fall under the designated haat.

This means that strawberries and oranges can now find place in Bangladesh through the border haat at Balat.

According to official sources the border haat at Balat will be helpful in terms of distance besides the time that takes for transporting the perishable commodities and transportation cost of the farmers.
