Six hurt in cyclonic storm

NONGTOIN: A severe cyclonic storm hit Mairang civil sub-division on Friday night destroying 45 houses including a school and three shops.

The storm caught the villages of Nongkhlaw and Mawkarah by surprise.

In Nongkhlaw 8 houses were damages and six people received severe injuries.

In Mawkarah 5 houses were completely damaged and 46 people were rendered homeless.

All the six injured have been shifted to the Shillong civil Hospital.

A large number of trees and electric posts were uprooted by the storm.

The MLA of Mairang Metbah Lyngdoh along with MDC Rasor Rani and a delegation of KSU met the affected people.

The president of the KSU’s Nongkhlaw unit urged the Government to speed up the distribution of relief materials.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills District S.Kharlyngdoh, the loss at Nongkhlaw and Mawkarah was estimated at Rs 36 lakh and Rs 13.40 lakh respectively.

The Deputy Commissioner announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10,000 for those whose houses were damaged completely and Rs 5000 for those whose houses were damaged partially.
