SHILLONG: With the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) calling a six-day bandh in three districts Garo Hills from Monday, the Opposition NCP has blamed the State government for the prevailing situation there.

“The entire Garo Hills has come to a standstill and government employees are not in their offices,” NCP leader Conrad K Sangma said here on Monday.

While urging the State Government to take initiatives to bring back normalcy, he said anti-insurgency operation would not bring any solution.

It may be mentioned that the GNLA has called for bandh demanding withdrawal of counter insurgency operations carried out by the security forces.

“The Government should have a multi-pronged approach,” he said.

While questioning the rehabilitation package of the State Government, the leader of Opposition informed that only six out of the twenty GNLA cadres who surrendered last year have received a sum of Rs 1.5 lakh each.

“Many of them are on the run and I fear that they may go back to the jungles again,” he added.

Terming the reward offered by the police for GNLA chief Sohan D Shira as ‘provocative bait’, Sangma said, “It is not right. There are better ways to do it. Simply challenging the GNLA and putting a price tag on their heads won’t solve the problem.”

Later, a delegation of NCP met the Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh and sought a statement from the Government on the issue.

Power projects: Sangma has criticised the state government’s proposal to give some power projects to private companies.

“It is not wise on the part of the state government to be in a haste in handing over new power projects to private companies”, Sangma said.
