State witnesses stay incidents on 2nd night
SHILLONG: The State witnessed a series of violent incidents on the second night of the three-night road blockade, called jointly by four NGOs (KSU, FKJGP, SSSS and HNYF), on Tuesday.
As soon the fresh round of night road blockade came into effect at 7pm on Tuesday, reports of violent incidents started pouring in.
The four NGOs have called the three-night road blockade in protest against the alleged inclusion of voters with “dubious” origin in the State’s electoral rolls.
At Mawlai Nongmali, miscreants torched a truck just one hour before the night road blockade came into force. The truck was parked there for some drilling work.
Miscreants also burnt down a hatch in Lumdiengmet, Umpling.
Police arrested one of the two miscreants who pelted stones at Jeevs Restaurant in Don Bosco Square. The arrested person was identified as Eric Nonkhlaw. His accomplice managed to give police a slip.
Similar incidents took place in Ri Bhoi district also.
Four people were reportedly injured when a petrol bomb, lobbed by some miscreants,fell on them at 20th Mile, Ri Bhoi district.
Incident took place shortly after the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma along with his convoy crossed the area on his way to Shillong.
At Amlarem in Jaintia Hills district, unknown miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at State Bank of India, Amlarem Branch. No damage was done.
Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said that the district administration is assessing the damage which the district has suffered during the night road blockade.
Talking to media persons here on Tuesday, Goyal said the assessment report will be send to the Government for necessary actions.
Reacting to a query on the law and order situation, Goyal said the city has been demarcated into different sectors and magistrates are also keeping a close watch on the activities of the NGOs.”We are taking all precautionary measures to maintain law and order, he said.
The State police have already registered a case against the NGOs under the MMPO for resorting to bandh and causing damage to public property.
