SHILLONG: Taking a step to help self-help groups and farmers get access to urban markets, the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society (MSRLS) in collaboration with the Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department launched the Fresh Vegetables on Wheels on Friday at the premises of the Directorate.
The initiative seeks to sell naturally grown vegetables, fruits produced by farmers from a self-help group, Shlem Jingtip Village Organization, Nongthliew falling under Mairang constituency.
Chief Operating Officer of the MSRLS, Shanlang F Lyngdoh said the members of the Society encouraged the people of Nongthliew to move towards chemically-free farming although he informed that a section of the farmers are still using chemicals in Nongthliew.
“The farmers are taught on how to make bio-pesticides,” he told a group of reporters.
As the Society prepares the people for chemically-free vegetables and fruits, he said the farmers are eager to get a market for their produce as well.
Lyngdoh said another positive work of the farmers is that they practise multi-cropping where they grow carrots, cabbages and mustard.
The Vegetables on Wheels will be stationed at the premises of the Directorate at Garikhana. Nongthliew is also known for pig farming and people can also order bio-pesticide as well.
