Chess tourney concludes

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chess Association organised the 43rd Meghalaya State ‘A’ Chess Championship from August 15-17 at Lama Villa Community Hall, Shillong. The chess tournament was inaugurated by International Chess Master Atanu Lahiri in the presence of International FIDE Arbiter Biswajit Bharadwaj and officials of Meghalaya Chess Association. Altogether, 44 chess players from eleven districts of Meghalaya took part in the tournament which was conducted under Swiss League System of seven rounds by F Thangkhiew, Senior Fide Arbiter. Barbith M. Sangma from West Garo Hills District was the champion of the tournament scoring six points from seven rounds. Defending champion Rijied Katrai H D Sutnga, G Medhi (Power Sector), Silkam Sangma, M C Mawlong, Silseng Marak, Bensing Momin, Kiron Joshi and Kevinson Jyrwa came in the top 10 category. The top four winners will represent Meghalaya at the National Senior Chess Championship to be held in Kolkata from December 8-18 organised by All India Chess Federation. Moreover, the Meghalaya Open Chess Championship 2019 will be held in October this year for all age categories. For more details, interested participants can log on:www.meghalayachess.com.
