Banks brainstorm at regional level for growth, future prospects

SHILLONG: A first-of-its-kind consultation designed to generate ideas and review performance of banks and their alignment with national priorities was conducted at the Regional Level by State Bank of India (SBI) on Saturday and Sunday for the urban and rural regions of the city involving all branches within the regions’ jurisdiction. The meet was headed by top executives of State Bank of India, North East Circle.
The meet focused on the ways and means to increase credit to various sectors of the economy, enhance use of technology to bring about innovation and enable big data analytics and make banking citizen-centric besides becoming more responsive to the needs of senior citizens, farmers, small industrialists, entrepreneurs, youth, students and women.
The meet focused on reforms in PSBs with emphasis on challenges faced by the banking sector.
The consultation also deliberated on banks’ performance and and its alignment with national priorities in areas such as credit support for economic growth, infrastructure / industry, less cash/ digital economy, Jal Shakti, et al.
At the end of the consultation, a number of implementable and innovative suggestions have risen up on improving the performance. The suggestions have been collated and sent to the zonal level for further discussions at the SLBC/ State level after which, final consultations will be held at the national level to compare both intra and inter-bank performances.
Meanwhile, the Indian Overseas Bank, Guwahati Region also organised a consultative meet to brainstorm on ideas to maximise the potential of Public Sector Banks.
