SHILLONG: East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya has the highest number of cases in terms of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) even as the health concerns are raised for mothers as well in the state as a whole.
Speaking to a group of reporters on the sidelines of International Youth Day, deputy director of STIs, A Lyngdoh said that when it comes to STIs, the scenario in the state looks quite bad as cases are on the rise.
“Mothers are being diagnosed when they come to the hospital. This is just the tip of the iceberg,” she said.
She said that the scenario is quite alarming and the department is trying to reach out to urban and rural areas wherein pregnant mothers are to be screened.
Lyngdoh informed that the people will have to be aware that they are at risk as it is important for people to be tested. People who are at risks are sex workers, intravenous drug users and young people for their risky behaviour. On the other hand, till July, the number of people living with HIV is 4329.
